What to Expect from your Skin Camouflage consultation 

Face-to-Face Appointment

For achieving best results, your consultation will take place in person at our Bristol Clinic, where we offer appointments on a Saturday morning. During your visit, we’ll conduct precise colour matching and provide personalised technique guidance tailored to your specific needs. Everyone’s skin tone and texture is unique, and these subtle variations cannot be accurately assessed through remote consultations. 

The in-person format also gives you the opportunity to practice application techniques with professional support, ensuring you feel confident using the products independently at home.

Please note: While we understand that distance can sometimes be a challenge, comprehensive assessment and accurate colour matching can only be achieved through face-to-face consultation. If travel is difficult for you, please don’t hesitate to discuss this with us to explore what options might be available. 

The Process in Detail

Preparing for Your Appointment

To ensure the most successful consultation possible, please consider these preparation guidelines: 

  • Skin Preparation: If your skin tends to be particularly dry, we recommend hydrating the areas to be treated with skin camouflage for several days leading up to your appointment, including the morning of your visit. Well-moisturised skin provides the best foundation for product application and colour matching.
  • Fake Tan Considerations: If you regularly use fake tan and wish to be colour-matched to this enhanced tone, please apply it a few days before your appointment as usual. However, if fake tan isn’t part of your regular routine, please avoid applying it for several weeks prior to your consultation. Accurate colour matching can only be achieved based on your skin tone at the time of the appointment. 
  • Makeup Guidelines: If skin camouflage will be applied to your face, please arrive without makeup. You’re welcome to bring your usual makeup with you to apply before leaving if you prefer. 
  • Clothing Recommendations: Consider wearing appropriate clothing that allows easy access to the areas requiring treatment. You may wish to bring shorts if legs need colour matching, or suitable tops for other areas. A hair band can be helpful if your hair might interfere with the treatment area.
  • Practical Considerations: As powders are used during the consultation process, lighter-coloured clothing is advisable to avoid any marks on dark garments.

Appointment Duration and Structure 

Your consultation is scheduled for approximately 90 minutes, providing comprehensive time for:

  • Complete skin assessment and consultation
  • Thorough colour matching process
  • Product trials and testing
  • Detailed demonstration of application techniques 
  • Practice time with my professional guidance 

This extended session ensures you receive the individualised support needed to achieve optimal results. While some practitioners offer shorter 30-minute appointments, our experience shows that thorough guidance and troubleshooting requires more time to be truly effective.

Important to note: While appointments are structured for 90 minutes, some sessions may conclude earlier depending on your individual needs. The session fee remains consistent regardless of exact duration, as it covers preparation time, materials used, and comprehensive follow-up documentation. Should additional time be required beyond the scheduled session, this would be discussed with you beforehand.

Achieving Effective Coverage 

Skin camouflage is highly effective at concealing a wide variety of blemishes, scars, and marks, and can successfully provide natural-looking coverage for most clients. When properly applied using professional-grade products and techniques, skin camouflage can create seamless coverage that blends naturally with your surrounding skin tone.

Results do vary between individuals depending on factors such as skin type, the nature and location of the area being treated, and how well the recommended products and techniques are applied. During your consultation, we’ll assess your specific needs and provide realistic expectations about the coverage achievable for your particular situation, ensuring you have a clear understanding of what skin camouflage can accomplish for you.

Colour matching is done to the colour of the skin at the time of the appointment. Therefore, if self-tan is used on a regular basis, it should be on the skin at the time of the appointment. If self-tan is not used regularly but is only occasionally used, then this should not be on the skin at the time of the appointment. It is worth considering the time of year and regularity of use to enable the best possible match.

In addition to skin camouflage, we also offer a topical silicone filler, Dermaflage, which is ideal for small, indented marks such as chicken pox or acne scars. This is a valuable, effective and simple technique, but can be difficult to manage initially and therefore a colour match and education (with self-practice) can be confidence building.

Consent and Decision-Making

Consent is a vital part of any skin camouflage consultation. Every client, regardless of age, is treated with respect, dignity, and autonomy. Before any demonstration or photographic documentation takes place, informed consent is always sought.

For adults, this includes a discussion of what the appointment will involve, the types of products used, and how the outcome will be recorded and shared (if applicable). 

For children and young people, consent is considered in two parts:

  • Parental/guardian consent is required for anyone under 16.
  • The child’s own agreement is equally important. I will always take the time to explain the process in age-appropriate language, and a child or young person’s comfort and understanding are prioritised at every stage. 

Camouflage should never be imposed, even with good intentions. My approach is to support choice, not cover-up. When a young person actively wants to explore skin camouflage and feels involved in the process, the results are more empowering and meaningful.

If at any point a client (of any age) is unsure or changes their mind, they are free to pause or stop the session.

Investment in Your Consultation

 Skin camouflage consultations are specialist appointments requiring significant expertise, preparation, and individualised assessment. Due to the comprehensive nature of these sessions – including full evaluation, colour matching, product trials, and personalised guidance – we are unable to offer complimentary consultations.

How much does skin camouflage cost?

For private clients, the consultation fee is £250, which includes:

  • A 1.5-hour appointment
  • Skin tone assessment and colour matching
  • Step-by-step application guidance
  • A personalised treatment plan and product report sent after the session

A £160 non-refundable deposit is required at the time of booking to secure your appointment, with the remaining £90 payable on the day.

If cost is a concern, you may wish to explore these alternatives:

NHS Services: Some NHS dermatology departments historically provided camouflage support, though this service has become increasingly limited in recent years.

Changing Faces Charity: This organisation offers a free national skin camouflage service available to anyone through self-referral or GP referral. Clinics operate in various locations across the UK, typically once monthly per location. Please be aware that waiting times are generally 6-8 months due to high demand.

Your Consultation Report

Following your appointment, you’ll receive a comprehensive report within 2-3 working days. This detailed document includes: 

  • Consultation Summary: Overview of your assessment and product trials conducted during the session
  • Product Recommendations: Specific products matched to your skin tone and individual requirements
  • Application Guide: Step-by-step instructions for proper application and aftercare techniques
  • Supplier Information: Direct ordering links to trusted suppliers (products are not currently sold directly through the clinic)

This report serves as your ongoing reference guide, ensuring you can successfully continue your skin camouflage routine independently at home.
